You're new to the skills necessary to complete this project, or maybe you've tried them just once or twice before.

This project is intended for kids ages 6+. The yarn wrapped cardinal is so cute! Red yarn and feathers are the basic supplies you'll need to make your very own red bird!

Print Project

Step 1

First, click here to download and print the template; then cut out the shape.

Step 2

Trace the pattern onto a piece of rigid cardboard. Cut out the shape.
TIP: Scraps from a shipping box, a shoe box or a cereal box make great material for the base of your Cardinal.

Step 3

Wrap the entire cardboard shape with red yarn. When you are happy with your wraps, cut yarn from the skein, then tie the end in the back to secure. Tuck in ends.
TIP: Wrap back and forth to be sure you cover the entire body.

Step 4

Tuck in and glue red feathers onto the bird's head and tail. Let dry.

Step 5

Trace the face pattern onto black construction paper and cut out the shape. Glue it onto the bird's head.
TIP: Use image as a guide.

Step 6

Cut out a small orange triangle for the bird's beak and glue it into place.

Step 7

Finally glue on a small wiggle eye. Let dry.
