macramé necklace
| Step 1 |
| Cut a 60" [152.4 cm] strand of ivory rope. |
| Step 2 |
| Fold the rope in half and make sure the ends are even with one another. At the fold, tape the rope to your working surface and leave the loose ends facing toward you. |
| Step 3 |
Tie a square knot. Start the knot approximately 12" [30.5 cm] down from the middle of the rope. This will allow for a 24" [61 cm] loop that will form the "chain" of the necklace. Begin the square knot by placing the left rope end over the right, forming a loop. Pull the left rope under and through the loop. Pull the ends to create a little slack. Now, take the rope end on the right and place it over the rope end on the left. Pull the right rope under and through the loop. Pull the ends to finish your knot. TIP: Leave your square knot slightly loose, as you will need to work other pieces of rope into it later in the project. |
| Step 4 |
| Cut two 40" [101.6 cm] strands of cotton rope. |
| Step 5 |
Use a lark's head knot to tie each strand of cotton rope to the "main loop," one on each side of the middle square knot. TIP: To create a lark's head knot, take one of the 40" [101.6 cm] strands of cotton rope and fold it in half, making sure the ends are even with one another. Work the folded end through the right side of the middle square knot and pull it through by 3"-4" [7.6 cm]. Then, take both ends of the cotton rope strand, thread them through the loop of the folded end and pull to tighten. Repeat with the other strand of cotton rope on the left-hand side of the square middle knot. |
| Step 6 |
Now there are six strands of rope hanging from the main knot. Take the 3 strands on the left and make a square knot; repeat and make another square knot using the 3 strands on the right. TIP: To make a square knot with three ropes, start with the strands on the left of the middle square knot with the rope ends facing you. Lay the right-hand rope over the middle rope, then lay the left-hand rope over the right-hand rope, forming a loop. Pull the left-hand rope under both the right and middle ropes and through the loop. Pull the ends to tighten. With the three rope ends facing you, bring the left-hand rope over the middle rope, then lay the right-hand rope over the left-hand rope, forming a loop. Pull the right-hand rope under both the left and middle ropes and through the loop. Your square knot is complete! Pull the ends to tighten. Repeat with the three strands on the right of the middle square knot. |
| Step 7 |
| Next make a square knot using the four strands of rope in the middle. To make a square knot with four ropes, lay the right-hand rope over the two middle ropes, then lay the left-hand rope over the right-hand rope, forming a loop. Pull the left-hand rope under both the right and middle ropes and through the loop. Pull the ends to tighten. With the four rope ends again facing you, bring the left-hand rope over the middle ropes, then lay the right-hand rope over the left-hand rope, forming a loop. Pull the right-hand rope under both the left and middle ropes and through the loop. Your square knot is complete! Pull the ends to tighten. |

| Now make a square knot using the two outer strands of cord, wrapping them around all four strands in the middle. Take the same steps to create a square knot with three ropes outlined in Step 6. In this case, you will treat the four middle strands of rope as one. |
| Step 9 |
| Trim the ends and unravel the ends of the rope to give your necklace an undone look. |
| Step 10 |
| Remove the tape from the top of the necklace. |
| Step 11 |
