Keep it classic with this one-button vest that's easy to knit with Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® yarn.
Step 1

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: S/M (L, 1X/2X)
Finished Bust About 48" (55", 63") [122 cm (139.5 cm, 160 cm)]
Finished Length About 26" (28", 30") [66 (71 cm, 76 cm)]
NOTES: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
GAUGE: 8¼ sts + 11 rows = about 4" (10 cm) in Seed st; be sure to check your gauge.
STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
- M1 (Make 1): An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.
Skp (Slip, Knit, Pass): Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.
PATTERN STITCHES:
1. K1, p1 Rib (Worked over an odd number of sts)
- Row 1 (WS): P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
- Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.
2. Seed St (Worked over an odd number of sts)
- Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
- Rep Row 2 for Seed st.
NOTES:
Vest is worked in 3 pieces: back and 2 fronts.
- The hood is worked directly onto the neck edge of the vest.
- The edgings on fronts and armholes are worked in one with the back and fronts. Armhole edgings of the back and fronts use different stitches.
- A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.

Step 2

INSTRUCTIONS:
BACK:
Cast on 49 (57, 65) sts.
Working back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles, and beg with Row 1, work in K1, p1 Rib for 2 rows.
Next Row (WS): Purl.
Beg with Row 1, work in Seed st until piece measures about 16" (17", 18") [40.5 cm (43 cm, 45.5 cm)] from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Shape Armholes
Row 1 (RS): Cast on 3 sts for armhole edging, k these 3 sts, then work in Seed st to end of row – you will have 52 (60, 68) sts in this row.
Row 2: Cast on 3 sts for armhole edging, p these 3 sts, then work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3 – 55 (63, 71) sts.
Row 3: K3, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 4: P3, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 until armholes measure about 9" (10", 11") [23 cm (25.5 cm, 28 cm)] from cast-on sts, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Shape Shoulders and Neck
Note: Shoulders and neck are worked in Garter st (k every st on every row).
Rows 1 and 2: Bind off 10 (12, 14) sts, k to end of row – 35 (39, 43) sts at the end of Row 2.
Rows 3-6: Bind off 5 (6, 7) sts, k to end of row – 15 sts.
Bind off.
LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 29 (33, 37) sts.
Note: The middle front edging of the Vest is worked in one with each of the fronts. The edging is the 4 sts that are outside the marker.
Row 1 (WS): Knit 4, place marker (pm), work in K1, p1 Rib to end of row.
Row 2: Work in K1, p1 Rib to marker, slip marker (sm), p1, k3.
Row 3: Knit to marker, sm, purl to end of row.
Row 4 (RS): Work Row 1 of Seed st to marker, sm, p1 (for reverse Stockinette st), k3 (for Garter st).
Continue as established, working 4 sts outside the marker as established for front edge and remaining sts in Seed st until piece measures same as back to armholes, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Shape Armhole
Row 1 (RS): Cast on 3 sts for armhole edging, k these 3 sts, then work in Seed st to marker, sm, work as established over 4 front edge sts – 32 (36, 40) sts.
Row 2: Work as established over first 4 sts, sm, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3.
Row 3: K3, work in Seed st to marker, sm, work as established over last 4 sts.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until armhole measures about 6" (7", 8") [15 cm (18 cm, 20.5 cm)] from cast-on sts, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Shape Neck
Row 1 (WS): Work as established to marker, remove marker, slip these last 4 sts to a holder for hood, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3 – 28 (32, 36) sts.
Row 2: K3, work in Seed st to end of row.
Row 3: Bind off 4 sts, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3 – 24 (28, 32) sts.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: Bind off 3 sts, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3 – 21 (25, 29) sts.
Row 6: K3, work in Seed st to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 20 (24, 28) sts.
Row 7: Work in Seed st to last 3 sts, p3.
Row 8: K3, work in Seed st to end of row.
Rep Rows 7 and 8 until armhole measures same as back to ‘shape shoulders’, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Note: Shoulder is worked is Garter st.
Shape Shoulder
Row 1 (RS): Bind off 10 (12, 14) sts, k to end of row – 10 (12, 14) sts.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Bind off 5 (6, 7) sts, k to end of r
