Next Row (RS): Knit the knits and purl the purls over 4 sts, slip next st. Slip remaining 10 sts onto a holder to be worked later. First Section Continue on the 5 sts on your needle, knitting the knits and purling the purls on each row and slipping the last st, until first section measures about 12 in. (30.5 cm), end with a WS row as the last row you work. Cut yarn and slip these 5 sts onto a holder. Second Section Return 5 sts from the first holder to your needle and rejoin the yarn, ready to work a RS row. Next Row (RS): Knit the knits and purl the purls over 4 sts, slip next st. Continue on the 5 sts on your needle, knitting the knits and purling the purls on each row and slipping the last st, until second section measures same length as first section, end with a WS row as the last row you work. Cut yarn and slip these 5 sts onto a holder. Third Section Return the last 5 sts from the first holder to your needle and rejoin the yarn, ready to work a RS row. Work as for second section. Assembly Lay piece onto a flat surface and separate the sections, 1, 2 and 3. Braid the 3 sections together, end with the sections in the same position that they began, 1, 2, 3. With the piece still on the flat surface, carefully return the sts in each section to your needle. Join yarn so that you are ready to work a RS row across all sts. Row 1 (RS): Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts to the last st, slip the last st. Rep Row 1 until piece measures about 18" [45.5 cm] from beginning. Bind off loosely in rib. Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. FINISHING: With yarn tail threaded into blunt needle, sew cast-on end to bound-off end, being careful not to twist headband. Weave in ends. |
