caron® cotton angel cakes™ crochet triangle tote bag

This pattern's shape is inspired by Japanese market bags or Azuma Bukuro, which are typically made using one rectangular piece of fabric that's folded, sewn and knotted at the top for handles. This slouchy crochet bag uses an easy moss stitch pattern, made up of single crochet and chain-1 spaces. Mixing sold and stripped yarn, when stitched up this bag features a beautiful color block effect, making this bag both trendy and practical!

Print Project

Step 1

MEASUREMENTS: Approx 18½" [47 cm] x 18½" [47 cm]
GAUGE:

  • 15 sc and 18 rows = 4" [10 cm], take time to check your gauge
  • 19 sts and 19 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Moss St Pat (including sc and ch sts)
NOTES:
  • To join new color, work to last loop on hook of previous color. Yoh with new color, draw through rem loops and proceed with new color.
  • Carry color when not in use loosely up side of work unless otherwise indicated.

With a size U.S. G/6 (4 mm) hook and Contrast A, ch 62, leaving 10" [25.5 cm] tail for assembly. See diagram.
Foundation Row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Ch 1. Skip next ch. 1 sc in next ch. Rep from * to end of chain. Turn. 61 sts (including sc and ch sts).
Row 1: (WS). Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc. 1 sc in first ch-1 sp. *Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last sc. 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc. *Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last 2 sc. Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
First 3 rows of Stripe Pat are complete.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, rep last 2 rows for Moss St Pat until Stripe Pat is complete.
Fasten off.
Finishing:
Fold along diagonals indicated in folding diagram, matching A to A and B to B.
Sew edges of bag tog where indicated in seaming diagram.
Handle:
Sew left handle point to right handle point using beg chain tail, leaving no gap between two points.
Handle Cover:
With B, ch 16.
Row 1: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain. Turn. 15 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 3" [7.5 cm] ending on a WS row.
Fold handle cover in half lengthwise with WS facing, sandwiching handle. Working through both thicknesses, join last row to 1st row, working 1 sc in each st to end of row. Fasten off.
