Versatile small round brush for oils
I was admittedly surprised at the versatility of this brush. I couldn't use it for super fine details designed for even smaller round brushes.
However, I was able to accomplish a lot of the bolder variety of "hash" work on my attached painting project. The project is based on Vincent van Gogh's drawings from 1884 in Nuenen, putting four of his drawing scenes into one 16x20 painting.
This is not a style of brushwork for everyone. I decided to do virtually all of "thick hash work" using this brush. Basically any area that looks like a bold stroke of paint on the uppermost layer of paint is done using this brush. The third version from the top also includes smaller "dotted" brush work which I think cover's the extent of how "fine" the point gets. It didn't keep it's super sharp tip which you can tell because the marks are a bit thick.
I was delighted by the fact I could get both rounded hashes as in the first painting in the skies and the more "flattened" rectangular marks on the bottom piece. All while laying down a thick layer of paint to create a textured surface.
It can vary in size and can go from thin, to even taking the role of a small filbert or flat brush. While I wouldn't necessarily replace those brushes, it is good to know you have a brush that can achieve a variety of effects, especially as you use the brush more and it starts to display it's use, you know there can be another purpose. It is also quite a "sturdy" brush, so it might not be as gentle as a soft and dense badger hair brush that let's you gently paint wet on wet. But it will definitely hold paint and do a great job of letting you lay it down boldly!
That said, I've only done a handful of paintings with it but I think it's held it's shape well, and while it isn't as sharp of a point as when I first got it, I think it is a pretty durable and versatile brush for the value.
I've been pretty skeptical of synthetic brushes because of experiences buying from random companies popping up online/elsewhere outside of Michaels. They claim to be usable with harsh oils and solvents, but they definitely don't last. I've come to trust Michael's variety of Synthetic brushes to last and do the effects I need.
