Print Project

paper lantern
Step 1 |
Fold a piece of red construction paper in half vertically so you end up with a folded piece that measures 4½" x 12" [11.4 cm x 30.4 cm]. |
Step 2 |
Measure 1" [2.5 cm] in from the non-fold edge and lightly draw a line the entire length of the paper. |
Step 3 |
Now, measure across the paper horizontally in 1" [2.5 cm] increments on the fold side and draw a light line ending at the 1" [2.5 cm] line you drew in Step 2. |
Step 4 |
Cut the horizontal lines up to and stopping at the 1" [2.5 cm] line drawn in Step 2. Open the paper and lay it flat. |
Step 5 |
Cut two strips of blue construction paper 1" x 9" [2.5 cm x 22.8 cm] and glue one across the top and one across the bottom (above and below the slits). |
Step 6 |
Roll the paper into a “tube” shape to create the lantern, where the slits are vertical. Glue the two ends together. Use image as a guide. |
Step 7 |
Cut a piece of white construction paper to 8" x 9" [20.3 cm x 22.8 cm] for the centre "tube". Roll it into a tube to fit in the middle of the lantern and glue the ends together. Slide it into the lantern portion so that it is even with the top and bottom of the tube. |
Step 8 |
ADULT: Staple the white tube to the outer red tube at the top and the bottom of the lantern. |
Step 9 |
Decorate the lantern using the foam stars. |
Step 10 |
ADULT: Punch two holes on opposite sides of the top of the lantern. |
Step 11 |
Insert a chenille pipe cleaner into one of the holes, leaving about 1" [2.5 cm] on the inside. Bend it up and twist it around to hold. Lightly bend the chenille pipe cleaner over the top and insert the other end into the hole, bend and twist to secure, to make the handle for the lantern. |
