yarn bird
This project is intended for kids ages 6+. This adorable yarn bird is so fun to make. Choose a few different yarns and customize your little cutie as you please!
Step 1 |
Cut two pieces of cardboard: one 3"x5" [7.6 cm x 12.7 cm] and one at 3"x4" [7.6 cm x 10 cm]. |
Step 2 |
Wrap the yarn for your bird’s head and back around the larger piece of cardboard 25 times. Then, wrap the other two yarns (side and front of the body) around the smaller piece of cardboard 25 times each. TIP: Click here to download the step-by-step guide for easy to follow visuals. |
Step 3 |
Slide the yarn off both cardboard pieces and cut one end open. |
Step 4 |
Take the longer group of yarn and lay it on your work surface horizontally; then take one of the smaller groups of yarn and lay it perpendicular across the longer yarn. |
Step 5 |
Fold the longer yarn over the shorter yarn, gather it in your hand and tie a piece of matching yarn tightly around that bunch. |
Step 6 |
Now, fold the shorter yarn and tie a knot with a matching piece of yarn. |
Step 7 |
Take the other group of yarn and lay it on your work surface. Take the other knotted bunch of yarn and lay it perpendicular on top. |
Step 8 |
Now, wad a piece of construction paper into a ball. Place the ball on the center of the top yarn and wrap the yarn around the ball. |
Step 9 |
Gather all the yarn together with one hand. |
Step 10 |
Tie a piece of yarn around to make the tail. Hold the tail yarn in your hand and trim the ends with your scissors to complete the bird’s body. |
Step 11 |
To make the legs, take a chenille pipe cleaner and bend it up about 1" [2.5 cm] from the end and twist it to the longer piece. Bend the remaining chenille pipe cleaner to make three “toes”, then wrap the end around the vertical piece and cut off the rest. Repeat to make the second leg. |
Step 12 |
Cut a small piece of orange construction paper in a diamond shape, then fold it in half to make a beak. |
Step 13 |
Insert the legs by pushing them into the bottom of the bird, then glue on the beak and two wiggle eyes. Share your project photos with #MakeItWithMichaels |
