woven pencil cup
This project is intended for kids ages 5+. This crafty woven cup will make a great container to hold your pencils, crayons, or markers. You will learn the basic weaving technique of over/under and before you know it, you will have transformed a simple plastic cup into a woven work of art!

Step 2 |
Take your plastic cup and lay it upside down with the mouth middle on the template. Now, make a mark at each of the dividing lines that come out from the middle, on your cup with a pen (or marker). Now, flip the cup over, middle it on the template and repeat. |
Step 3 |
Cut down the sides of the cup at each mark at the mouth of cup to the mark at the base of cup. Leave approximately ¼" [0.5 cm] uncut at base. |
Step 4 |
Pull out the end of the yarn from the middle of the yarn skein. Make sure you have plenty of yarn to get started. |
Step 5 |
Weave yarn in and out of the weaving strips on the cup. Push the weaving to the bottom of the cup as you work your way up the cup. |
Step 6 |
When you have reached the top of the cup, cut the yarn and tuck tail into weaving at inside of cup. |
Step 7 |
ADULT: Secure the end with a bit of hot glue and let dry to secure. |
Step 8 |
To finish, cut 12 pieces of yarn about 36" [91.5 cm] long and tie them together at one end. Divide the 12 strands in three groups of four and braid them together. Tie a knot. |
Step 9 |
ADULT: Hot glue the braid around the top of the cup. You can repeat this same type of braid to wrap around the bottom of the cup, or simply wrap a long strand of yarn around the bottom several times, gluing to secure. |
