valentine's day heart sugar cookies

Heart-shaped sugar cookies are a must-have for Valentine's Day! So, don your chef hat and make some delectable cookies to serve at your Valentine's Day party!
Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt.

Step 2

With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. With the mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture; beat until combined.

Step 3

Divide dough in half; flatten into disks. Wrap each in plastic; freeze until firm, at least 20 minutes, or place in a resealable plastic bag.
TIP: You can freeze the dough up to 3 months (thaw in refrigerator overnight).

Step 4

Preheat oven to 325°C [665.6°F] and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 5

Remove one dough disk; let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Roll out 1/8" [ 0.3 cm] thick between two sheets of floured parchment paper, dusting the dough with flour as needed.

Step 6

Dip the cookie cutters in flour and cut shapes. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Reroll scraps; cut shapes. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Step 7

Bake the cookies. Rotate halfway through bake-time until edges are golden for approximately 15 minutes.

Step 8

Remove cookies from the cookie sheet using your large spatula and place on a cooling rack. Cool completely on wire racks.

Step 9

Mix icing with icing color for desired shades of red and pink. Reserve some white.

Step 10

Thin a portion of white, red and pink icing with ½ teaspoon of water until it is thin enough to flow.

Step 11

Fill six bags of icing with tips as follows:

  • White icing with #2 tip
  • Thinned white icing for flowing and cut the tip (no decorating tip needed)
  • Red icing with #2 tip
  • Thinned red icing for flowing and cut the tip (no decorating tip needed)
  • Pink icing with #2 tip
  • Thinned pink icing for flowing and cut the tip (no decorating tip needed)
TIP: Outline with the #2 tip-filled bags, let it dry, then fill in with the desired color of flow icing.
Step 12

Decorate with icing and add sprinkles as desired.
