twisted natural hemp necklace

Thread wood beads as you make this trendy Twisted Natural Hemp Necklace to wear this summer. You have plenty of hemp to make a matching bracelet (for your wrist or ankle) or make gifts for your friends!
Step 1

First, cut a 144" [365.76 cm] piece and a 24" [60.96 cm] piece from 20 lb. hemp cord.

Step 2

At about 1½" [3.81 cm] from one end, tie a loop. The loop should be about 1" [2.54 cm] with a ½" [1.27 cm] excess.

Step 3

Tape the hemp cord to your working space, above the knot. This will be the base of your bracelet.

Step 4

Tie the 144" [365.76 cm] hemp cord around the base cord, as well as the ½" [1.27 cm] excess cord (from Step 2) just below the knot. Make sure the strands on either side of the tie are even.
TIP: Work your knots over the excess cord for an extra firm hold.

Step 5

Make a series of square knots around the base cord for about 7/8" [2.22 cm]. To do this, take the right cord and fold it across the front of the base cord below the bead, horizontally, making the shape of a backward number “4”.

Step 6

Now, take the left cord and place it over the right cord, bend it back under the right cord and across back of the base cord then up through the opening of the backward “4”. Grab the ends of both cords and pull tight.

Step 7

Slide a bead onto the base and push it up to the last knot.
TIP: Wrap a piece of tape around the end of the base cord and cut it to an angled point; then use it as a needle to help thread the bead onto your cord. You may need to use a bead reamer to open the hole in a bead a little bit.

Step 8

Make a square knot around the bead to start your next series of knots.

Step 9

Repeat Steps 5-8 to continue the pattern for seven sections.

Step 10

After the seventh bead is added, make about ½" [1.27 cm] of square knots.

Step 11

Now, slide on a bead and make a square knot it and slide on another bead. Repeat for a total of five beads, then make about ½" [1.27 cm] of square knots.

Step 12

Slide on a bead and repeat Steps 5-8 to continue the pattern for seven sections.

Step 13

After the last section, tie a double overhand knot with the base cord around the two outside working cords below the last bead.

Step 14

Trim the ends as close to the knot as you can and add a generous amount of glue. Let dry.

Step 15
Slide on a bead, tie a double overhand knot. Slide on a last bead and tie another double overhand knot. Trim excess hemp cord.
TIP: To wear, slide the last beads through the first loop.
