shell macramé earring

Bring the feel of the beach when you pair shells with bamboo cording with these Shell Macramé Hoop Earrings. See the instructions to learn how to make your own trendy DIY!
Step 1

First 16 pieces of 10" [25.4 cm] bamboo cording. Set eight cords aside.

Step 2

Attach eight cords to along the bottom curve of a hoop earring with a lark’s head knot.
TIP: Fold a cord in half. Place the fold under the hoop. Grab the ends of the cord and bring them around the front of the hoop; then thread them through the fold. Pull the ends to tighten the fold against the hoop to make a lark’s head knot.

Step 3

Separate the cords in four sections of two. Make a square knot in each section. To do this:

  • There are four strands in each section. Separate the strands left (A) strand, right (B) strand and two in the center are the base strands.
  • Cross the A strand over the base strands to make the shape of a “4”.
  • Now, move the B strand over the A strand, under the center base strands and through the opening of the “4” on the left.
  • Grab a hold of both A and B then pull tight so the knot works its way up to the top. Hold onto the center strands as you work the knot up.
  • For the second half of the knot, cross the B strand over the base strands to make the shape of a backward “4”.
  • Now, move the A strand over the B strand, under the center base strands and through the opening of the “4” on the right.
  • Grab a hold of both A and B then pull tight so the knot works its way up to the top. Hold onto the center strands as you work the knot up.
Step 4

To decrease, drop the two outside cords and re-distribute the cords into three sections of four strands. Make another square knot across the three sections.

Step 5

Decrease again. Drop the two outside cords and re-distribute the cords into two sections of four strands. Make another square knot across the sections.

Step 6

Decrease one last time. Drop the two outside cords and re-distribute the cords into one section of four strands. Make another square knot.

Step 7

Unravel the excess strands and comb out the ends.

Step 8

Use scissors to even out the ends so you have the shape of a chevron.

Step 9

Open a jump ring, thread through the hole of a shell and the loop at the top, inside of the hoop ear wire. Close the jump ring.
TIP: To open and close a jump ring, simply grasp the jump ring on both sides with chain nose pliers and twist the ring open, from side-to-side. Never pull the jump ring which can cause distortion.

Step 10

Add a fishhook earring to the top loop.

Step 11
Repeat for a second earring.
