premo! sculpey® clay terrazzo earrings
Step 1 |
Protect your work surface with a disposable cover, such as wax paper (or disposable foil). |
Step 2 |
Start with clean hands, unwrap, and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay through a conditioning machine. |
Step 3 |
Use the acrylic clay roller to roll out 1/4 block of white clay to a thickness of no more than 1/8" [.32 cm]. |
Step 4 |
Mix 1/16 block of Alizarin Crimson with 1/16 block of white. Mix 1/16 block of Spanish Olive with 1/16 block of white. |
Step 5 |
To create a terrazzo look, use small amounts of the two clays mixed in Step 6 and small amounts of Spanish Olive, Alizarin Crimson and Beige. Start with the darkest clay first (Alizarin Crimson). Pinch off little random sized bits from the bar of clay and press them onto the white sheet. Randomly cover an area on the white sheet that can accommodate all three sizes of the circle cutters. |
Step 6 |
Next, pinch off bits of the Spanish Olive and press them randomly onto the sheet. Then follow with bits of light Alizarin Crimson, light Spanish Olive and finally Beige. |
Step 7 |
Roll over the sheet with the acrylic clay roller to level the sheet. |
Step 8 |
Use the circle cutters to cut out one large, one medium and one small circle. Cut the middle out of the large circle with the smallest circle. |
Step 9 |
Cut the large and medium circles in half with a blade. |
Step 10 |
Arrange the pieces as they will appear on the finished earring, with the small circle at the top, the medium half circle in the middle (curved side at top), and the large half circle at the bottom (with the small circle cut-out side at the top). |
Step 11 |
Carefully make holes in the pieces using the needle tool to poke neatly all the way through the clay. Go through from front to back then back to front to make the holes neat. The holes should line up as follows: one hole at the bottom of each small circle directly over a hole at the top of each medium half circle. Two holes at the bottom of the half circles directly across from two holes at the top of the crescent shapes. |
Step 12 |
Preheat oven to 275 °F [130 °C] and bake the pieces for 30 minutes per ¼" [.6 cm] thickness according to package directions.
|
Step 13 |
Connect the pieces using pliers and jump rings. |
Step 14 |
Glue ear posts to the backs of the top circles and allow to dry completely. |
