You're somewhat experienced with the skills necessary to complete this project, but you haven't mastered all the elements, yet.

mindful mini garden centerpiece

Create inner clarity and a state of calm with this mini garden centerpiece by Nat G. that blooms year-round at your dinner table!
Step 1

Take some time to open the container of creativity and mark it with a ritual that feels nice to you. It could be lighting a candle, burning incense, cleaning up or taking a few deep breaths. Perhaps you even set an intention for this time. Just a little something to signal to your mind that there is space to play and explore now. It also helps to activate your senses and creates conditions conducive for creativity.
TIP: Remove any obvious distraction, such as cellphone or computer, from your space so you're not mentally somewhere else for this time.

Step 2

Gather your materials. As you do, perhaps you take a moment to engage in a practice of gratitude. Perhaps you call to mind all it took for the materials to be here in front of you. The labor to fabricate, the science and technology behind it, the structure that needed to be in place to make it happen, the transport, the care and the love people might have placed into it.

Step 3

Now it’s time to start the work! If desired, paint or stain your wooden box. Use Whitewash Wood Enhancer for a minimal, natural look. As you’re starting to work, notice the sound of your brush, the smell of your paint and how it all feels in your body. Start to enter the moment through by simply observing. What do you know to be true in this moment? Begin there to focus your mind.
TIP: With your brush, move along the direction of the wood in the same way across the box. This allows for a smooth, even look.

Step 4

Measure your foam to fit into your wooden box, marking lines on the foam to remember where there’s excess foam. Then cut off the excess along your lines using your floral foam cutter tools, especially the CleanKut™ Foam Cutter. Wait 15 seconds for the Cutter to get hot before you insert your blade into the foam. Let it be a practice of patience as you softly guide the cutter through the foam without forcing it and observe where your mind wants to go when something doesn’t move so quickly. Can you allow yourself to slow down too? Make sure the foam fits neatly within the box but sits a tiny bit below the rim of the box (so it doesn’t stick out over it).
TIP: Apply almost no pressure to the foam cutter tool. It will only get bent and cut less straight. To cut straight, you can mark a line that you want to cut through on your foam if you like. Don’t worry about it having to be super exact too, the project is very forgiving here.

Step 5

Using your glue gun and hot glue sticks, apply some glue drops on all sides to fix the foam inside your box, so it doesn’t move. Make sure it’s flush and there are not too many gaps. This is the final piece of your foundation, so it may be a nice time to check in with your own foundation. How are your sitting bones grounded on the chair that you are in, or how are you calibrating the weight between your feet? Where does your skin touch the ground below you? Take a moment to consciously observe and make any micro adjustment that would strengthen your own foundation.

Step 6

Now it’s really time to get creative. Listen to yourself as you start the process of decorating your foundation. What materials/positions/textures call you? Can you stay present for what arises within? The goal really is the process of creating itself, so allow yourself to be imperfect and make mistakes, rather than getting stifled by perfection. Mark where you’d like to place your LED candle on the foam foundation. Then, trace its bottom onto the foam before cutting a base for the candle into the foam with your foam cutter tools. Cut a shallow, about ½" [1.27 cm] deep circle into the foam. The candle should sit snugly within this base. You may attach your candle with a bit of hot glue on the sides that you can easily loosen if you need to replace the battery, or just place it there and turn it on.
TIP: Use your CleanKut™ tool to trace the outline of the circle, and then use the plastic tools to scrape out the base, but there’s lots of ways to get the same result here.

Step 7

Now you get to decorate your mini garden! Observe what succulents/greenery/florals call you and let yourself move with that. Here you get to create your own rules and be truly free. You can cut your greenery to the desired size with diagonal cutters and simply stick them into the floral foam in any arrangement you like. Chose succulents and placed taller ones around your center circle, then added smaller succulents on both symmetrically on each side. Also, use hot glue to attach some moss to the foam base where needed to fill in white space.

Step 8

Something doesn’t feel good even though you thought you’d like it there? Get rid of it. This is the time to be able to make mistakes and move on with ease. Notice when you’re bringing in judgment or limiting beliefs and simply observe. By giving these thoughts the attention, they crave in an objective way, you refrain from trying to push them out, which will likely make it a little easier to simply be present in the process.
TIP: Use moss to fill in the bottom parts of your mini garden and hide any traces of your foam. You could even have the moss spill over the edges of the box a bit.

Step 9

Once you’ve filled in your garden and you intuitively feel it’s done, allow yourself some time to reflect on the process. What’s come up for you? Do you feel a little more clear? Close your creative time just as you started it, by marking it with a ritual. This gesture might mirror the beginning one, you may blow out your candle or take another few deep breaths. Just let it be something to allow you to mentally move on with whatever your day holds next.
