Print Project

Step 1

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Finished Circumference About 20" [51 cm], will stretch to fit a range of sizes.
GAUGE: 8½ hdc = about 4" [10 cm]; be sure to check your gauge.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
NOTES:
- Hat is made in 2 pieces, top and side.
- Top of hat is worked in joined rnds with RS always facing.
- Side of hat is worked back and forth in rows as a rectangle.

Step 2

INSTRUCTIONS:
TOP:
Ch 3.
Rnd 1 (RS): Work 11 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (2 skipped ch count as first hdc); join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – you will have 12 hdc in this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in same st as join, 2 hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – 24 hdc.
Rnd 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – 36 hdc.
Rnd 4: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – 48 hdc.
Rnds 5-8: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.
Rnd 9: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in next 5 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 6 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – 42 hdc.
Fasten off.
SIDE:
Ch 49.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (2 skipped ch count as first hdc) and in each ch across – 47 hdc.
Row 2 (Buttonhole Row): Ch 2 (counts as hdc) turn, hdc in next 43 sts, ch 1, sk next st for buttonhole, hdc in next st, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – you will have 46 hdc and 1 ch-1 sp.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc) turn, hdc in next st, hdc in each st and ch-1 sp across, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 47 hdc.
Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Wrap the side around your head, lapping the buttonhole end over the opposite end to determine button placement.
With sewing needle and thread, sew button to side aligned with buttonhole.
Sew long edge of side to outside edge of top, sewing through all layers where buttonhole end of side overlaps.
Weave in yarn ends.
