FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
- Finished Circumference: About 20" [51 cm], will stretch to fit a range of sizes
- Finished Height: About 11" [28 cm]
GAUGE: 8 sts + 5½ rnds = about 4" [10 cm] over Rnds 1-5; be sure to check your gauge
STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
- FPDC (Front Post Double Crochet): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPDC.
- HDC-BLO (Half Double Crochet in Back Loop Only): Yarn over, insert hook in back loop only of indicated st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
- HDC-FLO (Half Double Crochet in Front Loop Only): Yarn over, insert hook in front loop only of indicated st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
- SC2Tog (Single Crochet 2 Sts Together): (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
NOTES:
- Hat is worked in one piece in joined and turned rnds beg at lower edge.
- If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; join with sl st in first sc – you will have 40 sc in this row/rnd. Use beg tail to sew gap at base of first row closed and proceed to Rnd 2.
- When instructed to work in a st "2 rnds below", work into the indicated st in the rnd numbered 2 less than the rnd you are currently working. For example, when working Rnd 3, a st "2 rnds below" is in Rnd 3 – 2 = Rnd 1.

HAT:
Ch 40, taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to make a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same ch as join and in each ch around; join with sl st in first sc – you will have 40 sc in this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc in next st and in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st as join, FPDC around next st 2 rnds below, *sc in next st, FPDC around next st 2 rnds below; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc – 20 sc and 20 FPDC.
Rnd 4: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc-flo in next st and in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.
Rnd 5: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc-blo in next st and in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.
Rnds 6-13: Rep Rnds 4 and 5 four times.
Rnd 14: Rep Rnd 4.
Rnd 15 (Decrease Rnd): Ch 1, turn, sc2tog around; join with sl st in first sc – 20 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail into blunt needle and through sts of last rnd. Pull to close opening at top of Hat.
Knot securely.
FINISHING:
Weave in ends.
