leather-effect clay tassels
Step 1 |
Roll out one block each of leather-effect clay in watermelon and berry into even sheets about .04"-.08" [.1 cm-.2 cm] thick using an acrylic roller (or the clay machine on setting 6). TIP: The leather-effect stands out even better if you move the clay sheet gently by hand after rolling it out, pulling it apart a bit. |
Step 2 |
Place the leather-effect clay sheets on parchment paper and use a blade to cut out a 2.55" x 4.72" [6.5cm x 12cm] rectangle from each sheet. TIP: Try to get as close as you can to these dimensions. |
Step 3 |
Roll one portion of saffron yellow leather-effect clay into a ball. |
Step 4 |
Roll one portion of olive leather-effect clay into a thicker cord and cut off a piece about 0.6" [1.5 cm] long. |
Step 5 |
Skewer the yellow ball and the longer green connector on a bead piercing needle and balance over an oven-safe cup so that the beads are hanging in the air across the cups opening to prevent pressure marks developing as they harden in the oven. |
Step 6 |
Now harden the leather-effect clay beads and the rectangles on parchment paper for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 266°F [130°C] on both upper and lower heat. Leave to cool. |
Step 7 |
To make the tassel, turn the hardened rectangles over. Mark a line with a pencil about 0.4" [1 cm] from the edge. |
Step 8 |
Cut thin strips (approximately .08" [.20 cm] wide) up to the pencil line using scissors. Do the same with the berry rectangle. |
Step 9 |
Coat the upper edge of the leather-effect clay rectangle with super glue and roll up as tightly as possible. Make sure that the clean side is facing down (or outwards). Hold the tassel until the glue is dry and has set. |
Step 10 |
Thread the spring hook key ring onto a piece of cord about 15.75" [40 cm] long and push it into the middle. Double the cord and thread first the connecting piece and then the ball onto the doubled cord. |
Step 11 |
Now, tie a knot after each bead to fix it in place. Then thread each of the two tassels onto a single string of the cord. Tie a triple knot and cut off the ends of the cord. Push the knots inwards so that they cannot be seen. Share your project photos with #MakeItWithMichaels |
