Layering is the key to creating a flower with depth. Layers of paint works to create this beautiful floral painting.

Print Project

Step 1

Paint the entire canvas, including the sides, with black gesso. Let dry.
TIP: Gesso will give you a nice surface to “grab” your paint as you apply it to the canvas.

Step 2

To paint your flower, begin with the middle of the flower. You can apply paint with a paintbrush (or palette knife) in small curved strokes. Work your way from around the middle outward.
TIP: Layer the paint as you go by letting it dry before adding the next layer. You can blend it while it’s wet, but to get the layered effect, let the layers dry.

Step 3

Add leaves or smaller flowers/buds to finish out your composition.
