Step 1 |
First, click here to download and print the template for the costume and cloud; then click here to download and print the template for the headband. |
Step 2 |
Next, lay the pattern onto foam board and trace. |
Step 3 |
Heat your hot knife and lay your foam board on a protected surface (such as cardboard or a cutting mat). Slowly cut out the two rainbow and cloud shapes. |
Step 4 |
Cut the arches in the rainbow apart, then lightly trace each piece so you have a guide for painting. TIP: This costume will be worn like a "sandwich" with one piece in front and one piece in back. Be sure to trace and paint two rainbows so you have a two-sided rainbow. |
Step 5 |
Paint in traditional rainbow order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet. Set aside to completely dry. |
Step 6 |
Use a black chisel tip marker and trace a thick black line between each arch. |
Step 7 |
Hot glue the cloud cut-outs to the end of each side of the rainbow. |
Step 8 |
Cut two 36" [91 cm] lengths of ribbon. Position the rainbow on the child and make a mark on the back of the painted rainbow for each shoulder. Hot glue one end of each ribbon to the back of rainbow where marked, towards the top of the rainbow. |
Step 9 |
Now, position the back rainbow on the child, mark where each ribbon would attach. Draw a rectangle about 2" x ½" [5 cm x1.3 cm], then cut out with the hot knife. Thread the ribbon through the rectangle and tie it at the shoulder to fit the child. |
Step 10 |
To make the sunshine headband, trace the pattern onto yellow and orange foam; then cut out the shapes. |
Step 11 |
Stick the orange piece onto the bottom of the yellow piece, then hot glue it onto the headband. |
Step 12 |
Embellish the headband with gems. Share your project photos with #MakeItWithMichaels |
