Great for developing my art skills
I am an amateur and these pastels were just what i wanted to hone my capabilities. I used them to create a "wash" type rough, shaded drawing, then used sharpies to add details. Turned out much better than expected!

It's nice that Michaels offers this item. I was able to get what I wanted right away. I wanted many colors but I didn't need large pastels as this is a trial piece. Thank you. Oh! and I got a discount as they always have coupons.

Faber Castell Soft Pastels
I teach painting classes using soft pastels (online). This brand of soft pastel is on my supply list for a number of reasons: low price, great colors, and the right hardness. I use a variety of brands in my paintings, but Faber Castell brand is always on my palette and I encourage my students to try them.

Great colors!
I love the wide range of vivid colors. These pastels partner well with acrylic paints. I tend to use them to add contrast (e.g., shadow or a pop of color). Color spreads well for a gentle effect.

Love These Pastels
I love my new set of Faber-Castell Creative Studio Soft Pastels,71 ct. It has a good color range and the pastels blend well but the sticks don't crumble easily and hold together to do the finer detail.

How a mistake in the end got me what I needed.
I was initially looking for pastel pencils for weathering model rail cars. The clerk may have misunderstood me and gave me the chalks. I ended up not being disappointed. The chalks work very well, though there are colors that may not be appropriate for my needs. I will try those, too, and who knows...

Good pigmentation, they should be used with a fixative otherwise they smudge quite easily. THey don't blend as easily as I had hoped.

A good basic pastel
Not really a "soft" pastel stick; more like medium between a hard pastel, like Prismacolor, and a true soft pastel such as Sennelier. Works well as a base pastel which won't fill in all of the paper's texture before you finish up with a softer, richer brand. Colors are solid and the pastel lays down smoothly, without scratches or clumps. A good, general purpose workmanlike pastel.

It took a few brands of pastel to find my favorite
It took me a few tries to get the correct pastel. I began an art class in pastel and took my new box of pastels with me only to find the first set I purchased would not perform as I wanted and the instructor expected. I then tried another brand and again my attempt provided no avail. I found Faber-Caster by interviewing others in my class and found they were all pleased with Faber-Caster pastels as well as other mediums they purchase by them. I am not on my way to creating my master piece and no long have to borrow pastels from other now that I am a proud owner of Faber-Caster soft pastels.
