No bears were harmed to make this cosy cute rug! Crocheted with simple shaping in ultra plush Bernat® Sheepy™ yarn, this bear's head doubles as a cushy pillow! A great little rug for tummy time or just sinking little toes into.

Step 1

MEASUREMENTS:
Approx 35½” [90 cm] diameter, excluding Head and Paws
GAUGE:
8 sc and 9 rows = 4” [10 cm].
SPECIAL STITCH EXPLANATION:
- Sc2tog = Draw up a loop in each of next 2 stitches. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Step 2

INSTRUCTIONS:
Note: Join all rnds with sl st to first sc.
BODY:
**With MC, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. 6 sc
Rnd 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 12 sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1. *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join. 18 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1. *1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join. 24 sc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1. *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Rep from * around. Join. 30 sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. Join. 36 sc.

Cont as established, inc 8 sts per rnd to 222 sc. Fasten off.
Place markers for Paws on the following sts of last rnd: 19th, 79th, 129th and 189th.
PAWS:
First Paw: With RS facing, join MC with sl st to first marker on last rnd of Body.
Rows 1 to 12: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 16 sc. Turn.
Row 13: Ch 1. Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 12 sc. Sc2tog. 14 sc. Turn.
Row 14:  Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Row 15: Ch 1. Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 10 sc. Sc2tog. 12 sc. Turn.
Row 16:  Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn
Row 17: Ch 1. Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. Sc2tog. 10 sc. Turn.
Row 18: Ch 1. Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. Sc2tog. 8 sc. Turn.
Fasten off.
Second, Third and Fourth Paws: Work as given for First Paw, joining yarn at each additional marker.
Surface Sl st Claws: With 2 strands of Bernat® Softee Chunky™, join yarn with sl st to centre of last row of Paw. Keeping yarn at back of work (WS), sl st down into rows below to create a straight vertical line of surface sl sts 3” [7.5 cm] long, taking care to sl st loosely to avoid pulling in work as you stitch. Fasten off.
Rep to create 2 more Claws evenly spaced on either side of first Claw.
HEAD:
Front and Back (Make 2 Pieces Alike)
With MC, work from ** to ** as given for Body. Do not fasten off at end of second Head piece (Front).
Place Front and back tog with WS facing each other, and Front facing.
Joining Rnd: Ch 1. Working through both thicknesses, 1 sc in each sc around, inserting pillow form halfway
through rnd. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Step 3

MUZZLE:
With A, work from ** to *** as given for Body. Fasten off.
EARS (Make 2 each with MC and A).
Ch 2.
Row 1: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 5 sc. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc to end of row. 10 sc. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1. *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * to end of row. 15 sc. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1. *2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * to end of row. 20 sc. Fasten off.
Join Ears: Hold 1 MC Ear and 1 A ear tog with WS facing each other. With A ear facing, join MC to first sc. Ch 1. Working through both thicknesses, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing to head.
TAIL:
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. 8 sc
Rnd 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 16 sc.
Rnds 3 to 6: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join.
Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing to body. Stuff tail lightly.
FINISHING:
Sew muzzle and ears to head as seen in photo. With black Bernat® Softee Chunky™ yarn, embroider nose and eyes with satin st and mouth with stem st as seen in photo. Sew head to body, centering between first and fourth paws as seen in photo. Sew tail to body as seen in photo.
