You can't go wrong with sculpey
I love using sculpey for my sculpture projects. It's easy to use and once its baked, can be painted on just as easily. They have a variety of colors tonchoose from and even opaque and glow in the dark clay if you want. I've tried a few other types of clay before but sculpey in my opinion is the best.

Who Needs a Kiln?
I didn't even know this existed until my granddaughter introduced me to it. And a little goes a long way. We made one project and have plenty left for several more! Very cool stuff. Bake it easily in your oven and keep it forever! I'm sold!

Never heard of this till my granddaughter showed it to me. She wanted to make Nemo and lo and behold, there was a youtube video showing us exactly how to do it with this unusual clay! Really fun!
