Gauge: 16 sts /27 rows = 10.2 cm (4")

Abbreviations:
k – knit
p - purl
MC – main colour
CC – contrasting colour
pm – place marker
sts - stitches

Instructions
With MC Cast on 132.
Continue with MC; work bottom border rows.

Bottom border:
Row 1: *k3, p3; rep from * to end of row ending with p3.
Row 2: *p3, k3; rep from * to end of row ending with k3.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more (6 rows).

Pattern Stitch A
Join MC work set up row
Row 1 (RS): k3, p3, pm, *k3, p3, k3, p3, pm, k3, p3, pm. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, k3, p3 (You should have 14 markers placed across row. This will help keep track of your stitch patterns.)
(Note: The markers are in place after set up row. Slip the markers as you reach each one across each row following the set up row.)
Row 2: p3, k3, *k3, p3, k3, p3, p3, k3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, p3, k3.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 two times more (6 rows).
Row 7 (RS): k3, p3, *p3, k3, p3, k3, k3, p3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, k3, p3.
Row 8: p3, k3, *p3, k3, p3, k3, p3, k3, p3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, p3, k3.
Repeat rows 7 & 8 two times more (6 rows). This is a total of 12 rows.

Pattern Stitch B
Join CC
Row 1: k3, p3, *k6, p6, k3, p3, Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, k3, p3.
Row 2: p3, k3, *k6, p6, p3, k3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, p3, k3.
Rows 3 – 6: Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more (6 rows).
Row 7: k3, p3, *p6, k6, k3, p3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, k3, p3.
Row 8: p3, k3, *p6, k6, p3, k3. Continue from * across row to last 6 sts, p3, k3.
Repeat Rows 7 & 8 two times more (6 rows). This is a total of 12 rows.
Continue to repeat Pattern Stitch A with MC for the 12 rows specified and Pattern Stitch B with CC for the 12 rows specified until work from beginning measures approx. 34" ending work with the completing of Pattern Stitch B.

Top Border
Join MC

Tips

This is a play with the garter rib and basketweave stitch. The challenge is to keep on track as you shift back and forth from the knit to a purl stitch.
