Mixed Media Collage

This is sure to be one of your students favorite projects as it allows them to explore the creation process one piece at a time. Challenge them to think about everyday items that they could use in unconventional ways to make their collage.

Materials

  • Canvas, 12"x12"
  • Martha Stewart Crafts™ Craft Paint – Pool, Artichoke, Granny Smith and Mardi Gras Beads
  • Gesso – White
  • Magazines
  • Gel Medium
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

Step 1 To begin, paint the background of the canvas with Pool, Artichoke, and Granny Smith Martha Stewart Crafts™ paint. It does not have to be one solid color, so feel free to mix colors. Paint the edges of your canvas as well. Let dry.

Step 2 Freehand shapes and flowers to fill the canvas. Circles and stripes always create a quick background. Let dry.

Step 3 Using a large paintbrush, water down white gesso and paint on top of your background. Make sure that the gesso is thin enough to still see the images underneath. Allow gesso to dry.

Step 4 Cut pictures out of a magazine, arrange them together and glue down with gel medium to create a unique image.

Step 5 Cut out words to make a saying that suits you! Always brush gel medium back over the pieces that you glued down to seal.

Step 6 To finish, take a thin liner brush to add accents and details with black gesso and Martha Stewart Crafts™ paint.

There are no rules in mixed media so make it all your own!
